Someday-perhaps quite soon-we may have a yet deeper theory that ex- plains why the electron field is the same everywhere: maybe superstring theory, or "M-theory," or some as yet undreamt-of theory.
The "final theory," they suspect, is none other than the "superstring theory" mentioned in the passage just quoted, or, as it is now called, "M-theory."2 The mathematical structure of this theory is so profound that after twenty years of intensive research by physicists and mathematicians, they feel that they have barely scratched its surface.
One of the greatest physicists of our time, in describing superstring theory to a layman, felt frustrated by his own inability to communicate the grandeur and magnificence of what his research had revealed to him: "I don't think I've succeeded in con- veying to you," he said, "its wonder, incredible consistency, remarkable ele- gance, and beauty."3
It is almost certainly only an approximation to some deeper theory, such as a grand unified theory or superstring theory.
The same thing is believed to be true about superstring theory, which many physicists think may be the ulti- mate unified theory of all physical phenomena.
